Offset Printing
What is Offset Printing?
In offset printing the matter to be printed is neither raised above the surface of the printing plate nor sunk below it. Instead, it is flush with the surface of the plate; thus offset is classified as a planographic method of printing.
Offset printing uses a common technique in which the inked image transfers (or “offsets”) from a plate to a rubber blanket and then to the printing surface. When combined with the lithographic process, which relies on the repulsion of oil and water. The offset method employs a flat (planographic) image carrier. Ink rollers apply ink to the image areas of the carrier, while a water roller coats the non-image areas with a water-based film.
The modern “web” process feeds a large reel of paper through several sections of a massive press machine. The machine usually spans several meters and prints continuously as it feeds the paper through.
Prepress production plays a crucial role in the printing process. During this stage, technicians process all files correctly for printing. They convert the files to the appropriate CMYK color model, finalize the layouts, and create plates for each color to be used on the press.
Offset lithography
Offset lithography is one of the most common methods for producing printed materials. It is often used for newspapers, magazines, brochures, stationery, and books. Compared to other printing techniques. Offset printing is best suited for cost-effectively producing large volumes of high-quality prints with minimal maintenance. Many modern offset presses use computer-to-plate systems instead of the older computer-to-film workflows. Which further enhances their efficiency and print quality.
Offset printing comes in two types: wet offset and waterless offset. In wet offset lithography. Technicians use a mixture of wetting solutions to control ink adhesion and protect non-image areas. Waterless offset lithography employs a different method, covering a plate’s non-image areas with a layer of ink-repellent silicone. Waterless offset lithography is a relatively new technique.
